Elfert Sermon September 26, 2010 Martin Elfert

September 26, 2010: back at All Souls for this homily. There is a little Spoonerism near the beginning in which I refer to Rabbi Hillel as “Rabbi Herschel.” I do know what his real name is – I just didn’t say it! The lessons for that day were:

Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15
Psalm 91:1-6, 14-16

1 Timothy 6:6-19
Luke 16:19-31

I gave this homily at Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver BC on June 27, 2010. The first 50 seconds or so of the recording gives a little sample of the wonderful jazz band playing for the service that day.

The only mic employed for the recording was the headset microphone that I was wearing. Thus, the congregation sounds a little distant. The lessons for that day were:

2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14
Psalm 77:1-2, 11-20

Galatians 5:1, 13-25
Luke 9:51-62

I gave this homily at All Souls Episcopal Parish in Berkeley, CA on March 14, 2010. The recording reflects the large and lively congregation in attendance that morning.  The lessons for that day were:

Joshua 5:9-12
Psalm 32
2 Corinthians 5:16-21
Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32

A Blog!

My wife, Phoebe has been posting on her blog for some time - it seemed like time for me to catch up. I envision this blog mostly as a repository for recordings and, perhaps, videos of homilies that I have delivered here and there. From time to time, other reflections may join them.

The title - “Surprised by Joy” - comes from a Wordsworth poem (although many of us associate it with C.S. Lewis, who borrowed it for an autobiography). It speaks deeply to love, loss, and faith:

Surprised by joy — impatient as the WindI turned to share the transport — Oh! with whomBut Thee, deep buried in the silent tomb,That spot which no vicissitude can find?Love, faithful love, recalled thee to my mind —But how could I forget thee? Through what power,Even for the least division of an hour,Have I been so beguiled as to be blindTo my most grievous loss?—That thought’s returnWas the worst pang that sorrow ever bore,Save one, one only, when I stood forlorn,Knowing my heart’s best treasure was no more; That neither present time, nor years unbornCould to my sight that heavenly face restore.
